What You Need to Know Before You Spend a Penny on Advertising

Whenever I begin to discuss marketing or advertising with a new client, the first thing they usually ask me is if they should put an ad in the Yellow Pages or local newspaper. I ask them why they’d want to do that, and they tell me it’s because a competitor has done it or because lots of people read those publications.

My response is that they need a lot more knowledge, strategy and planning before they start throwing big money into these expensive advertising mediums that often produce disappointing results. Plus, there are
so many ways for small business owners to get advertising that costs next to nothing that it’s worth testing your message where you’re not digging into your marketing budget.
